Maatrika: Unveiling the Heart of Motherhood
is a poignant thematic Bharatanatyam work through the labyrinth of motherhood, reimagining mythological figures with human vulnerabilities, doubts, and sacrifices to reveal the intricate tapestry of maternal love.


About the Artiste:

Deva Priya Appan, senior disciple of Smt. Neila Sathyalingam is an experienced and dedicated artiste who has performed in various dance productions like Arupadai, Glimpses of Angkor, Nirmanika, Chidambara Ragasiyam, Heroines of Raja Ravi Varma, SITA, Agathi by Apsaras Arts in India, Australia, UK, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Priya has expanded her dance vocabulary by learning different styles of dance and choreography from well-known dancers, including the Dhananjayans and Sandhya Kiran from India and Dr Chandrabanu in Melbourne.

As a professional consultant psychiatrist, Devapriya has special interest in promoting mental health awareness through the medium of arts. She has performed a key role in a dance production that was aimed to promote awareness about schizophrenia. She has also presented about the role of arts (Bharatanatyam), in medical humanities at a medical education conference in Vienna, Austria in 2019.

She was bestowed the title "Bharata Kala Mani" by Apsaras Arts in 2022 for her achievements in Bharatanatyam.

Maatrika is a dance production developed at the IPAC Residency Programme under the mentorship of Bragha Bessell.

Drawing from personal and professional insights, Deva Priya Appan unveils the emotional fortitude and complexities of the maternal experience, resonating universally with its raw authenticity.
